Advancing Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 12 on responsible consumption and production requires stronger public participation in electronic waste (e-waste) recycling. Despite growing policy attention, consumer engagement remains limited, particularly in developing economies where informal disposal dominates. Social media and information publicity have emerged as transformative channels for environmental communication, capable of shaping awareness, attitudes, and behavioral intentions toward sustainable e-waste management. This review critically synthesizes 2015–2026 empirical studies to evaluate how digital communication influences recycling-related behavior. Drawing from both qualitative and quantitative evidence, it identifies dominant patterns, theoretical perspectives, and contextual limitations in existing scholarship. Findings reveal that while social media effectively disseminates environmental knowledge and fosters public engagement, its capacity to sustain long-term behavioral change is constrained by content credibility, message fatigue, and limited access to formal recycling systems. The review underscores the need for longitudinal, cross-cultural, and intervention-based research that bridges awareness with tangible recycling actions. By positioning social media as a driver of environmental literacy and civic participation, this study contributes to ongoing global efforts to strengthen digital sustainability strategies and accelerate progress toward SDG 12.
